He earned his MD from the University of Pavia (1978) and a PhD in basic immunology from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm (1985). He began his research career at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, contributing to early HIV research, and later served as Director of the HIV Immunobiology Unit at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan. Over the past decade, he has directed his focus to the biology of healthy aging, exploring genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that determine individual aging trajectories.
