He is internationally renowned for his research on immunosenescence \u2014 the decline of immune function with aging \u2014 and for innovative applications of flow cytometry to study cellular mechanisms of disease and immune aging. He is Past-President of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) and lead author of three editions of the widely cited Guidelines for the use of flow cytometry and cell sorting in immunological studies.
